What to expect during your consultation
Dr Shaw will take time to get to know you, and to find out what is important to you in regards to the condition seeking specialist opinion on. He will take a thorough medical history for symptoms related to your condition and examine the relevant structures, followed by a review of your results.
An office ultrasound may be performed to look at the thyroid gland, parotid gland, or neck structures.
For thyroid conditions a flexible nasoendoscopy may be performed in rooms to examine vocal cord function. This is where after a spray of anaesthetic medication in the nose, a 2mm flexible videoscope is inserted via a nostril to inspect the oropharynx and vocal cords. It is usually painless and well tolerated, but we recommend not having hot drinks for 60mins afterwards. Flexible nasoendoscopy is also done for head and neck cancers to look for oral and oropharyngeal lesions.
Dr Shaw may recommend additional investigations, scans, or biopsies. He will you in a clear and coherent manner your results and the treatment options. Please ask any questions you may have.
