About Dr Douglas Shaw

Dr Shaw grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He completed a Bachelor of Science (Cell biology and Genetics) on the picturesque campus of the University of British Columbia in his home town. After a year of work in a cancer research lab and overseas travels, he came to Australia for medical school at Sydney University. He grew to love the climate and atmosphere of Australia, and it soon became home. Upon completing a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with Honours from Sydney University in 2007, he completed resident years at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Dr Shaw was awarded a scholarship to complete a Masters of Surgery at Sydney University in 2010 with a thesis investigating the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy in high-risk non melanoma skin cancers. He completed general surgery training through Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2017.
He undertook sub specialty fellowship training in the Surgical Oncology and Sarcoma Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital in 2018 with a focus on endocrine surgery and soft tissue tumours. He also undertook a Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Hospital.
Dr Shaw has appointments to Northern Beaches Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. He participates in the Endocrine multidisciplinary team meetings at both sites. Dr Shaw’s specialty interests include thyroid and parathyroid surgery, parotid surgery, soft tissue tumour surgery and skin cancer surgery including for melanoma. Dr Shaw’s goal is to provide a compassionate, personalised and holistic high quality care to his patients. He listens to what is important to his patients, ensures they and their families are fully informed and understand all aspects of their surgical care. He believes excellent communication with GPs and interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for achieving optimal results for his patients.
Dr Shaw regularly participates in conferences and educational activities to ensure he remains current with new therapies and guidelines for the range of conditions he treats.
Dr Shaw has been actively involved in medical student teaching through Sydney University, University of New South Wales and Macquarie University. He considers a great honour to teach and mentor health professionals of the future and enjoys seeing their commitment to learning show when someone takes the time to engage them in moments of clinical care.
Doug’s wife is a specialist Breast Surgeon in the Northern Beaches and they enjoy living in the community. Doug enjoys family time with his boys doing outdoor activities like mountain bike riding, surfing, and soccer.
